Complex and Severe Presentations

About complex and severe mental health presentations

Some mental health presentations involve significant complexity, whether due to the nature of the condition itself, a history of multiple diagnoses, or the impact on daily functioning. These presentations require careful, coordinated care and a team approach. At Level Up Psychology, we work collaboratively with GPs, psychiatrists, and other health professionals to provide psychological input as part of a broader treating team.

What this can include

  • Psychosis: Experiences such as hallucinations, delusions, or disorganised thinking, often in the context of schizophrenia or a mood disorder.
  • Bipolar disorder: Significant swings between low mood and elevated or irritable states that affect functioning and relationships.
  • Treatment-resistant depression: Persistent low mood that has not responded fully to previous treatment approaches.
  • Co-occurring conditions: Multiple diagnoses occurring together, such as PTSD alongside a personality disorder, or depression with substance use.

Our approach

Psychological therapy plays an important role alongside medication and other treatments for complex presentations. We focus on building coping skills, improving quality of life, processing difficult experiences, and supporting the person behind the diagnosis.

We are transparent about the scope of what psychology can offer and will refer on or involve other professionals where needed.

When to seek support

  • You or someone you care about is experiencing symptoms of psychosis or severe mood disturbance.
  • Previous treatments have helped partially but significant difficulties remain.
  • You are managing multiple mental health diagnoses and feel you need coordinated support.
  • You want psychological input to complement existing psychiatric care.
